1963 MOONEY M20D/C, 8768 TT,  GEAR HANDLE BROKE! GEAR UP BELLY DAMAGE ONLY, CHEAP !!

 

THE 1963 MOONEY CAME IN 2 VERSIONS:

THE “C” MODEL, WHICH WAS THE FIRST MOONEY TO COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH BOTH A METAL WING AND A METAL TAIL (YEP, THEY WERE WOOD BEFORE THAT).

THE “D” MODEL, WHICH MOONEY MARKETED AS A TRAINER, WITH THE LANDING GEAR OF THE “C”, BUT FIXED, NON-RETRACTABLE, WITH NO ACTUATOR INSIDE.  IT SOLD FOR ONLY A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS LESS THAN THE “C’ MODEL, AND MOONEY SOLD THEM FOR A FEW YEARS, BEFORE REALIZING THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL, WERE BEING CONVERTED USING FACTORY PARTS, TO THE RETRACTABLE “C” CONFIGURATION.

MOONEY EVEN MADE A WHOLE “KIT” TO DO THE CONVERSION

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE AIRPLANES, STILL CALLED A “D”, BUT REALLY A “C”.

NO DIFFERENCE IN 0-360 ENGINE, THE PROP THAT IT USES,PERFORMANCE, ETC. 

THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN IN CANADA FOR A LONG TIME, MAYBE SINCE THE BEGINNING.  WE DON’T HAVE THE FIRST LOGBOOK, BUT WE DO HAVE ONE MARKED “LOGBOOK 2”, AND IT IS A CANADIAN LOG, WHICH STARTS IN 1973.

USED BY A FLIGHT SCHOOL IN EDMONTON, THIS AIRPLANE WAS VERY WELL MAINTAINED, AND DOCUMENTED VERY WELL, PER CAA REQUIREMENTS.

IN REGULAR USE, THE LAST 100 HOUR INSPECTION WAS 11/30/2017, AND THE LAST ENTRY WAS IN 2018, NOT SITTER OR RAMP QUEEN.

LAST PITOT/STATIC INSPECTION WAS 6/2017

FOR A FLIGHT SCHOOL AIRPLANE, THIS MOONEY LOOKS A LITTLE BETTER THAN AVERAGE.

ALLOVER WHITE, WITH 2 TONE MEDIUM/DARK BLUE STRIPES.  THE PAINT IS SMOOTH AND GLOSSY, NOT CHECKED AND CHALKY.

INSIDE, THE TWO-TONE TAN CLOTH  SEATS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, NOT RIPPED OR TORN. THERE IS A STAIN ON THE FABRIC OF THE REAR SEAT THAT SHOULD CLEAN UP.

THE GYRO INSTRUMENTS ARE MODERN, AND THE WHOLE PACKAGE IS SET UP IN A “SIX-PACK” FORMAT, WITH A CENTER STACK FOR AVIONICS.

AVIONICS INCLUDED ARE:

KING KMA-24 WITH INTERCOM

GARMIN GPS 100

KING KR-86 ADF

COLLINS 250 COMM AND 350 NAV.

THE ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION HAS BEEN UPDATED FROM THE ORIGINAL, AND NOW IS ALL 2 ¼” INCH ROUND INDIVIDUAL GUAGES, NOT THE SMALL AND TROUBLE-PRONE ORIGINAL CUBE INSTRUMENTS.

THE FUSES HAVE BEEN UPDATED WITH RESETTABLE CIRCUIT BREAKERS, AND THERE IS A DIGITAL OAT GUAGE.

ALL IN ALL A GOOD INTERIOR SETUP

NOW BACK TO THE GEAR

THE EARLY (ALL THROUGH THE 1960’S) MOONEYS HAD A MANUAL GEAR ACTUATING SYSTEM.

THIS VERY SIMPLE, RUGGED SYSTEM IS REGARDED AS BULLET-PROOF, BUT THIS AIRPLANE, AND IT’S PILOT, MIGHT BEG TO DIFFER.

PLEASE NOTE THE HANDLE, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A JOHNSON BAR, SITTING LOOSE ON THE WING, SO THAT YOU COULD SEE WHAT IT WAS, AS WELL AS THE PICTURE OF THE BROKEN END OF THE BAR, AND THE SPOT IN THE FLOOR THAT IT BROKE OFF FROM !!

AS THE MANUAL GEAR SYSTEM IS SO BULLET-PROOF, THERE IS NO BACK-UP PROVIDED!

SO THE PILOT WAS AWARE OF WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, AND HE DID A GOOD JOB WITH THE LANDING.

THE DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME IS AS FOLLOWS:

THE 3 SCREW-ON BELLY PANELS, WHICH ARE REMOVED FOR INSPECTION, ALL SUSTAINED SOME SCRAPING.

ONLY ONE OF THE REINFORCING STRINGERS AND RIBS THAT SUPPORTS THESE PANELS HAS ANY SCRAPING, AND IT IS AN EASY TO ACCESS PIECE, ALL UNDER THE FLOOR, IT DOES NOT GO ABOVE THE WING BOTTOM EDGE.

THE NOSE GEAR DOORS ARE SCRAPED

BOTH OF THE INBOARD FLAP HANGER BRACKETS WERE SCRAPED ON THE BOTTOM, BUT THE FLAPS THEMSELVES WERE RETRACTED, AND DO NOT SEEM DAMAGED.

THE STEP WAS ALSO RETRACTED, SO IT WAS NOT DAMAGED.

IN GENERAL, THE DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME IS AS LIGHT AS YOU COULD IMAGINE, A TESTIMENT TO THE PILOTS SKILL, AND HIS KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT WAS TO COME.

THE PROPELLOR WAS BENT BACK IN THE INCIDENT, THE ENGINE SUSTAINED A PROP STRIKE, AND THE EXHAUST WAS DAMAGED, SO THESE ITEMS WERE REMOVED (UNBOLTED, NOT CUT, SO CONTROL CABLES AND WIRING ARE INTACT) AND ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THS LISTING.

THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE MOUNTOR FIREWALL, OF COURSE, FROM THIS LANDING.

NO DAMAGE TO THE WING, CONTROL SURFACES, TAIL OR TAILFEATHERS.

NO DAMAGE TO THE MAIN OR NOSE GEAR.

THE FUSELAGE IS STRAIGHT, THE DASH IS FULL OF MODERN INSTRUMENTS, AND IN GENERAL, THIS IS A WHOLE AIRFRAME.

FOR PEANUTS !!

LOGBOOKS INCLUDED STARTING IN 1970, AND JOURNEY AND TECHNICAL LOGS ARE UP TO DATE AND VERY COMPLETE.
