1978 BELLANCA 8-KCAB DECATHALON, 2705 TTSNEW AIRFRAME, CECONITE IN 2005, REPAIRABLE, CHEAP.

THE 8-KCAB DECATHALON IS A FOLLOW-ON MODEL TO THE EARLIER CHAMPION CITABRIA (AIRBATIC SPELLED BACKWARDS) AND THE CITABRIA WAS A SLIGHTLY AEROBATIC VERSION OF THE EARLIER CHAMP 7AC SERIES.

THE DECATHALON WAS DESIGNED IN THE 1970’S, WITH A BETTER, MORE AEROBATIC FRIENDLY WING THAN THE CITABRIA, A MODERNIZED DASH AND INTERIOR, FIBERGLASS COWLSAND OTHER STRENGHENING AND IMPROVEMENTS.

IT STILL HAS THE COOL, “CHAMPION” LOOK, HOWEVER.

THIS AIRPLANE HIT A MUDDY SECTION OF THE GRASS STRIP AFTER LANDING AND FLIPPED OVER.

AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE, SOME DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE AIRPLANE !

THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER, BUT IT IS NOT DESTROYED.  THE VERTICAL FIN SHOWS NO OBVIOUS DAMAGE.

THE SKYLIGHT IS BROKEN, AND THE CROSS BEAM IN THE CEILING IS BENT

THE WINDSHIELD IS BROKEN, AND THE CENTER SUPPORT IS BENT.

THE RIGHT WING INBOARD LEADING EDGE IS IMPACTED, BUT THERE IS NO OBVIOUS DAMAGE VISIBLE TO THE SPAR

THE LEFT WING OUTBOARD LEADING EDGE IS DAMAGED, BUT THE INBOARD SECTION APPEARS OK

3 OF THE LIFT STRUTS AND THE JURY STRUTS ALL SEEM STRAIGHT, BUT 1 LONG STRUT IS BENT.

THE AILERON BALANCES ARE GOOD

THE STEPS ARE BROKEN OFF.

THE FIBERGLASS LOWER COWL HAS AN AREA OF MISSING PAINT, BUT WE DON’T KNOW IF THIS WAS THERE BEFORE.  IT MAY HAVE FLEXED, LOSING THE PAINT, BUT IT IS NOT BROKEN.  THE UPPER IS GOOD.

THE HORIZONTALS AND ELEVATORS APPEAR UNDAMAGED.

THE DOOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS FINE, IT JUST HANGS DOON AT A FUNNT ANGLE WHEN THE FUSELAGE IS LEVEL (NORMAL ATTITUDE ON THE GROUND IS NOSE UP AND TAIL DOWN, OF COURSE.

THE TAILWHEEL IS A SCOTT 3200, AND THE WHEEL, SPRINGS AND THE ATTACH AREA ALL LOOK GOOD.

THE LOWER BOOTCOWL SKIN IS WRINKLED FROM THE BACK OF THE FIREWALL (WHICH DOES NOT SEEM TO BE HURT) TO THE BELLY SKIN.

THE DECATHALON, LIKE THE CITABRIA AND CHAMP BEFORE IT, HAVE A METAL TUBULAR STRUCTURE, WITH WOODEN STRINNGERS TO FILL OUT THE SHAPE, INCLUDING THE BELLY, AND SINCE THE GEAR WAS REMOVED AFTER THE INCIDENT AND THE AIRCRAFT MOVED ON THE BELLY, THE WOODEN STRINGERS ARE NOW BROKEN (AS YOU CAN SEE IN OUR PHOTOS).  THIS IS NOT TUBULAR OR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, JUST THE LIGHT WOODEN STRINGERS.

THE FABRIC WAS UPDATED WITH CECONITE ON THE ENTIRE AIRPLANE IN 2005, AND THE AIRPLANE PAINTED IN WHITE, YELLOW AND BLUE AT THAT TIME, SO IT LOOKS GREAT, NICE AND SHINY.

 

THE MAIN GEAR AND THE WHEELS AND BRAKES ARE UNDAMAGED, AND THE GEAR ATTACH AREAS IN THE FUSELAGE DO NOT SHOW ANY DEFORMATION. THE WHEEL PANTS ARE BOTH DAMAGED FORWARD.

INSIDE, BOTH BROWN SEATS ARE GOOD, AND THE DASH IS FULL OF THE FULL COMPLIMENT OF FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING A G METER.

THE AVIONICS PANEL UNITS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED, BUT A 2 PLACE INTERCOM IS INSTALLED AND INCLUDED.

NOTICE THIS AIRPLANE HAS MODERN TOE-BRAKES, NOT HEEL BRAKES LIKE THE OLD CHAMP, BUT IT IS STICK CONTROLLED, NOT A STEERING WHEEL, BECAUSE ANY TRUE AEROBATIC AIRPLANE NEEDS STICKS !

THE AEIO-320 ENGINE SUFFERED A PROP STRIKE, SO IT HAS BEEN REMOVED, AND IT IS NOT FOR SALE WITH THIS AIRFRAME OR IN THIS AUCTION. 

THE ENGINE WAS PROPERLY REMOVED, WITH WIRES AND CABLES UNBOLTED AND LEFT WITH THE AIRFRAME, NOT CUT.

THE ENGINE MOUNT APPEARS UNDAMAGED.

THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS GOOD, AND IT IS INCLUDED AS WELL.

THIS AIRPLANE IS SOLD WITH LOGBOOKS SINCE BRAND NEW 8/1978 (I STARTED A&P SCHOOL 9/1978, SO THAT IS A LONG TIME AGO), WITH COMPLETE RECORD UP TO DATE.  LAST ANNUAL WAS 2/2017, WITH NO OBVIOUS LONG GAPS IN THE LOGBOOK!!

WE ALSO HAVE LOTS OF EXTRA PAPERWORK THAT GOES WITH IT, INCLUDING FLIGHT MANUAL, AD LIST, 337’S, ETC.
