This is a
2-DVD set of WWII Vintage films covering US Navy Basic Flight Training, utilizing the
Boeing Stearman PT-17.
This 9-part series was produced in 1944-45 by the US
Navy to accompany the primary flight training curriculum. These films cover the basics of
flying a propeller-driven airplane, and are a fantastic introduction to "Aviation 101".
Produced, Directed and Hosted by USNR Lt. Robert "Bob" Taylor, a famous Hollywood
star of the era, this series covers all the essentials, from pre-flight planning through takeoffs,
landings, attitudes for flight, and ground reference maneuvers. If I were still working as a
full-time flight instructor, this is a series I would keep in my teaching library for students who
are interested in classic aviation. In addition to some thorough and understandable "chalk
talk", this series also contains some rare in-cockpit footage, and some great shots of the
interior of the "Yellow Peril", which is now one of the most sought-after classic warbirds
around.
The films are:
Film 1: "Flying Sense" (B&W, 24:17) Film 2:
"Before You Fly" (B&W, 34:47) Film 3: "First Flight Part I" (B&W, 13:52) Film 4:
"First Flight Part II" (B&W, 12:43) Film 5: "Attitudes of Flight" (B&W, 16:06) Film 6:
"Taxiing and Take-Offs (B&W, 19:04) Film 7: "Landings" (B&W,13:13) Film 8:
"Race Track Patterns, Part I" (B&W, 21:54) Film 9: "Race Track Patterns, Part II"
(B&W, 25:01)
