This is an incredible find! Here is the story:

I purchased this engine and turbo system in order to convert my stock Piper Comanche 250 into a turbo hotrod (the book says it could do 200 KTAS at 20K feet). I have since decided that I would rather have the money than the extra performance, so I've decided to sell the engine and turbo system.

When I purchased the engine and turbo system, it came off of a 1963 Comanche 250 Turbo (engine is an IO-540-C1B5) that had a gear up landing. Apparently the owner knew he was going to land gear up (couldn't get the gear down), so he set it down very gently and the damage was minimal. Nonetheless, the engine required teardown. The engine had only 365 hours SMOH and just 225 hours since new cylinders (replaced due to an A.D.). I own an aircraft maintenance shop, and we tore down the engine, split the case, and sent the crankcase, crankshaft, camshaft, and all internal parts to JAARS Aviation for magnaflux and dye penetrant inspection. It was done right, a very thorough tear-down inspection. They also checked the crank and rods for twist or any other abnormalities. Everything checked out perfect. We then re-assembled the engine with new bearings (standard size!) and new rod bolts and nuts, and of course all new gaskets and seals. We then installed the engine on a calibrated test stand (also at JAARS), and ran the engine for 1 hour at all power settings - including 35 minutes at full RPM. Everything checked out perfect - no leaks or abnormalities. So, we now have an engine with one hour since complete bottom-end rebuild, and 225 hours on new cylinders. The engine runs perfect, and looks pristine. It is fully signed off by an A&P/IA, and all the inspection work was signed off by a repair station. If you email me, I can send you all the logs. I have all of the engine logs since new. I am including all of the accessories with the engine - both magnetos (Bendix), the starter, the vacuum pump, fuel pump, the backup electric pump, the McCaulley prop governor (for 3-blade prop)  and even the 70 amp PlanePower alternator.

Now for the turbo: This whole system is in excellent condition, with less than 10 hours since overhaul of both turbos and both wastegates. When I was looking into the turbo conversion for my Comanche, I called Rajay Parts...they are the company that supports these turbo systems, and they can sell complete new systems. They told me that this entire system, if purchased new today, would be $40K!!!!! That is just for the turbo system - with no engine! It is a very cool system. If you aren't familiar with the Rajay conversions, they are "turbo-normalized", which means that the turbo delivers only enough boost to maintain sea-level rated power. This way, the engine runs only as hard as as a normally aspirated engine, but it can do it at much higher altitudes. By manually feeding in the turbo (by manually closing the wastegates), you can cause the engine to make the same amount of power at 20K feet as it would at 6K feet. This makes for awesome high altitude performance, both in terms of climb performance and cruise speed.

Now for the question I'm sure I'll get: will I sell the engine without the turbo system? No - at least not unless the turbo system sells first. I will sell the turbo system on it's own for $14K, and once it is sold, I would then sell the engine for $24K. Or, I will sell the two together as a package for $36K. But I won't sell the engine first - I don't want to orphan the turbo system.

Also, will this engine and turbo system work on other aircraft? Well, probably, yes. Many of the parts of the turbo system are interchangeable with Rajay systems for other aircraft. Most notably, the Aztec would be a good fit. But, you would have to check in detail with Rajay Parts to be sure. I do know that this system would work great on a number of experimental aircraft. The engine would be great for a Van's RV-10 - maybe the turbo would work as well?

Warranty - yes, I'm confident enough in this engine that I'm offering one - it's 6 months/100 hours. Contact me for details. However, because we did not test the turbo system, I can only warranty that the turbo system is complete and is as represented (Great condition, recently overhauled turbos and wastegates, etc). To clarify, I'm giving an operational warranty on the engine, but not the turbo system (since we tested the engine without the turbo system installed). But, I have high confidence that the turbo system will operate perfectly, based on it's condition and history.

I'm sure I didnt' answer all of the questions out there - so feel free to email me and I will get back with you ASAP. Please DO NOT BID BEFORE CONTACTING ME - I want to make sure that you are really understanding what you are bidding on, and that you are for real.
